every penny counts
Since I live with my boyfriend we split the grocery bill 50/50, we used to mess around with one person paying for all of it at once and then the other gives half the total mount later blah blah blah, doesn't sound like much of a hassle but it was. So I decided that when we check out we'll each take half and that will be the end of it, kind of a "close enough" policy. The first time we tried this method we were within $4, pretty sweet for the first try. The second time I (yes I because I do the sorting) we were within 33 cents! Mind you the sorting takes place in the check out line when the pressure is on, so it has become kind of a thrill trying to get our values as close to equal as possible. Today we got a few things and I took one item from his pile, worth 98 cents, and put it into my pile because I thought his amount was more than mine, but after checking out I realized that if I had left that one item worth 98 cents in his pile, our totals would have been within 2 CENTS of each other!! Needless to say I've been rather depressed since the incident, good thing I was purchasing items to make brownies, brownies that will in turn make my gut bigger so I will have more faith in my gut feeling in the future...ugh.
