elementary skills

A long time ago, when I was still in elementary school, I had stayed the night at a friend's house, in the morning we had breakfast, french toast. I cut up my french toast and stared to enjoy the syrup and powdered sugar combo, my friend (we don't speak anymore) started yelling at her father, (like seriously yelling, in a way that I would never speak to my parents) she was upset that he hadn't cut up her french toast for her. She then proceeded to yell at him for cutting up mine, he explained that I had cut mine up on my own, but instead of encouraging her to do the same he just did it for her. Now I'm not sure how old I was when this happened, but I was obviously old enough to cut up my own food, and old enough to think she was stupid for not knowing how to do so herself, and old enough to know that her father was an idiot for continuing to do it for her. How else was she going to learn? I remember feeling very proud that my parents had taught me how to do things for myself.
